Sunday June 15, now in 6 neighbourhood communities across the City of Vancouver, it's VANCOUVER CAR-FREE DAY.

During two years of incubation on Commercial Drive, as attendance climbed past 30,000, this open street festival drew music, dance, art, exhibitions (and exhibitionism), workshops, and lots of business for area merchants. Simply closing several blocks of a large commercial street reconnected tens of thousands with a ubiquitous public space to which all are normally forbidden at the penalty of death or dismemberment.

Yes, cars are not just the easiest way to move around in our culture, but they are also the single largest contributor of visits to Lower Mainland Emergency Rooms. Bicyclists and pedestrians know this all too well.

So, step off the curb across Vancouver without looking both ways--but only in the six festival areas--and celebrate sustainable commerce, free art and entertainment, children's play zones, and friendly public engagement.

Bicycle demonstrations, safety workshops, and valet parking are central to each location, and of course the bicycle (or transit) is the best way to get to--or move between--the 6 festival sites:

Commercial Drive (circa 1st Ave)
Cambie Village (16th to 19th Aves)
Main Street (circa 15th Ave)
Kitsilano (dispersed everywhere)
West End (Denman Street)
Marpole (Granville Street)

Volunteer at one of the sites for a great return on your ideas and sweat equity, or contact us to exhibit your wiles or wares: http://www.carfreevancouverday.org/ or info@commercialdrivefestival.org.

VANCOUVER CAR-FREE DAY. It's part of a world-wide movement; move with it!
